Chiropractic Care and Your Child

Many parents may not realize that chiropractic care can also be very beneficial for children. Chiropractic can treat a variety of symptoms in children of all ages, ranging from colic and ear infections in newborns to growing pains in older children and much more. Dr. Woods also specializes in craniosacral therapy, a technique that is a light touch manual therapy that addresses restrictions in the craniosacral system - the membranes and fluids that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord. Craniosacral therapy is very beneficial to newborns after the shock and challenge of birth. It's a non-invasive, gentle way to comfort and soothe your baby and can be a start to a lifetime of good health. The following is a list of conditions that can be avoided or improved in your newborn using craniosacral therapy as well as more traditional chiropractic methods:

Colic, Vomiting, Hearing Problems, Motor Problems, Seizures, Strabismus, Torticollis, Chronic Otitis, Dyslexia, Aphasias, Hyperkinetic Behavior, Spasticity, Down's Syndrome, Autism, Hydrocephalus, Abnormal Fears, Failure-to-Thrive Syndrome, Nursing Difficulties, Poor Sleep, Chronic Constipation, Bed Wetting, Growing Pains, Chronic Colds, and, of course, Back and Neck Pain.

Below are some Frequently Asked Questions regarding chiropractic care and your child.

How do I know when my child needs to see a chiropractor?

If your child has one or more of the conditions listed above, they should be seen by a chiropractor. If you are not sure, call, someone will be available Monday through Friday to answer your questions. Dr. Woods will be happy to discuss your concerns and let you know if chiropractic treatment will be appropriate.

How much treatment will my child need?

Children respond very quickly to chiropractic care, more quickly than adults. Often, a child's condition resolves after a couple of treatments. Depending on your child's needs he or she may need more or less care. Dr. Woods will examine your child on their first visit and can let you know how much care to anticipate.

Why hasn't my pediatrician recommended chiropractic care?

Pediatricians are not usually taught about chiropractic care in medical school and generally are not very familiar with how it works. Your child should, ideally, have both a chiropractor and a pediatrician. Your pediatrician performs annual check ups, administer medications, and is there for crisis care if necessary. If needed, Dr. Woods is available to answer your pediatrician's questions and to provide the latest research on pediatric chiropractic care.

Is chiropractic care for children gentle? Is it safe?

Not only is it gentle and safe, the chiropractic profession's safety record is excellent. In the 100 years since chiropractic was founded, there has never been a malpractice suit against a chiropractor for hurting a child. Dr. Woods has been treating children for over 20 years with both traditional chiropractic techniques and craniosacral therapy.
